Junya Watanabe is a street photographer who specializes in night photography. His work has appeared in campaigns for the likes of New Balance and Orphe. In his latest personal series, Watanabe stalks a late night Tokyo neighborhood whose neon lights are intensified by the mirroring presence of rain-soaked asphalt.
The tight alleyways of Ueno provide the backdrop to the evocative images in which shadowy figures linger beneath umbrellas, cast in neon glow from above and below. Something of a specialist at shooting Japan’s urban environments under the cover of night, Watanabe has captured both Osaka and the cherry blossoms of Tokyo under each city’s neon glow.
