Photographer Konstantin Newman shows a softer side to New York City with his series Blooming NYC. Drizzly, grey skies blanket the city but beneath them the streets are scattered with flecks of color as blossoms fall, settling tenderly on the sidewalks. Avoiding the typical NYC sights of streets penned in by towering buildings allowing only narrow slivers of sky to be revealed from the ground, Newman locates this series at the river’s edge where a parade of trees do their best to lighten the mood of an oppressive, heavy sky with their pink and white petals.
The New York sakura frames fisherman and runners against the water, while the Roosevelt Island tram hangs in the background spanning the East River. Newman’s compositions delicately capture the glowing blossoms in the musty drizzle, contributing the only color to the usually vibrant street scenes of the city.
