Robert Antal is a UK-based photographer from Romania who specializes in street photography. Turning his eye to the streets of London’s financial Square Mile, he treats viewers to a glimpse of a rare area of the city that ebbs and flows with traffic in vast contrast to the rest of the city. Where the likes of Soho, Shoreditch, and Mayfair are perennially filled with people, foot traffic around the City lulls as its inhabitants escape to their gilded towers to trade on markets. Either side of the long City lunchtimes and on weekends, the area has a solitude to be appreciated in such a central location.
Antal beautifully captures the juxtaposition of old and new between the neighbourhood’s traditional streets and the high-rise towers that strut above. The tight alleyways that always marked the area have only been emphasised with the modern architecture that has spring up, side by side over the past thirty years, creating a labyrinthine maze that feels both local and international in spirit.
